So true about the lengthy holiday season. I saw valentine's day candy going on the shelves at Duane Reade today. That's why fitness has to be a year round lifestyle. Those are all simple ideas that everyone should follow everyday. Thanks

Manhattan Personal Trainer:

Thanks for reading!

Most of this information is not covered by the average periodical or certification. We, No BS Fitness Solutions, have a different view of how the affects of training, to the layman "working out", has on an individual. It is the object of these blogs to enlighten the reading audience to our perspective and hopefully change the common paradigms illustrated in common publications. Thanks again for reading and Happy Holidays!

Brandon:

Thank you for reading!

Nobody really talks about this kind of stuff. It gets lost in all the "hype" of the latest and greatest exercises, lack of experience of the trainer, as well as this type of material is not covered in the average weekend "seminar". Further more, most people in this industry have a serious lack of understanding of how skillfulness equates to a desired result. The information is out there, with a click you can learn about skill based programs and or motor learning concepts. but, then I find the lack of information is then how do you put all this together? Hopefully, i will be able to shed some light on the matter and give you and our reading audience some knowledge of the hows and whys but more importantly some practicality to this topic.

Thanks again for reading, pass on the information and keep posting!

I feel the same way. Nobody is really talking about the actual skill work in an exercise program and I’m glad you blogged about it. People don't realize that the more skilled your exercises become, the more results you can create. I’m definitely going to forward this to a few friends. Thanks a bunch- Brandon.

To many coaches, trainers, and athletes focus so much on variety for the sake of keeping things "fun." Let's face it, a lot of people think exercise is boring.

I'm all about fun, however not at the expense of getting skillful. Both can be accomplished simultaneously through proper coaching and education. Coach T will get into this more. Unfortunately not so many fitness professionals are skilled at coaching and educating clients for the following reasons: 1) Because they were never taught 2) Once they realize they need more to learn they're lazy to learn or invest invest in themselves 3) Their ego is in the way and they're not open to learning.

But back to being fun. Generally a lot of clients have told me that exercise is not fun before they started training with me. "I've tried everything and nothing works," is what I usually here. After training with me for a good 3 mos they don't say any of that non-sense. Ironically I've used maybe a total of 10 exercises within that time frame. Ain't that something...

The reason was they didn't complain was 1) They were FINALLY getting results and 2) They were becoming better at those 10 basic skills. As they got better at those skills I was able to push the envelope within those skills by changing the typical variables of rest, sets, reps, load etc.

Before we would just do an upper/lower body superset... by the end of the 3rd month we're doing a 5 movement complex for 5 sets of 6 reps with the very same exercises.

Again I'm all about having fun, but as you can start to see it's not always about variety but making people very skillful in movement. When you become skillful then it opens up a whole new level. It's just like a video game, once you past level 7, then you get a whole new set of weapons in level 8.

Drew:

Thank you for reading! This is going to be a multiple part subject, and believe me i can talk about it forever. I agree with you that most trainers and coaches need to focus on the skill aspect of it and the quality of movement execution. The real issue behind that is, no one really covers the quality or more appropriately the skillfulness of the movement execution. they just see that the person moved. So if someone is performing a squat all the trainer/coaches see is that the person moved up and down...mission accomplished right? Wrong, there is a serious like in taking the movement, what we at NO BS call the movement problem, and break it all down to insure that performance meets the mechanical expectations. I do plan on covering all that as well as a whole bunch more in future blogs.

that picture is of Coach Randy Gruezo...I am not blessed with good looks and charisma ;)

Again, thanks for reading and keep commenting it helps with my creative process as well as let me know what you, the reading audience, would like me to cover in the future!

Carpe Diem

Cool post! I like the way you present this information. It's entertaining, good quality info resource for personal trainers in NYC or anywhere. Many people and trainers included need to focus on movement technique rather than going through the motions and or doing the same routine. BTW nice pic coach.

Thanks Darius!

I think that to many people read periodicals, and we can name a whole litany of them here, and figure that the person in the picture looks great therefore, if i do the same workout I should look great. Not one person is created equal so the same clothes that fit the super models may not fit you...same thing goes for training programs. This is why it is important that the program is best suited for you so that it maximizes your results or what I like to say maximizes one's investment. with that thought...most people will tell you well I know what I'm doing I don't need a program...my comment to them is when you do your taxes do you want to maximize your return or when you go into surgery do you do it yourself or have your little brother do it? 9 times out of 10 the answer is generally i want to maximize my tax return or i want to make it out of this medical procedure alive and that concept also applies to your fitness/athletic needs...I can go on! thanks for reading and please keep posting we are totally open for suggestions!

i believe workin out should go beyond aesthetics. one can achieve this short term. nd you're right bout it. one cannot just copy anythin from a fitness magazine and make it your own. one should customized a worout according to his/her wants & needs. great stuff, pare
